On the afternoon of November 5, 2024, the Parallel Session on New Energy Storage Driving Future Energy Transformation of the 7th Hongqiao International Economic Forum (HQF) was held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai). This forum was organized by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China, and co-hosted by the Institutes of Science and Development, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and The Paper. Ren Jindong, Deputy Director of the National Energy Administration of China, and Laureano Ortega Murillo, Presidential Advisor for the Promotion of Investment, Trade and International Cooperation, the Republic of Nicaragua, attended the forum and delivered speeches. Distinguished guests including Nobel Prize in Chemistry laureates, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the representatives of well-known domestic and international companies conducted special discussions focusing on the development of new energy storage technologies and new trends in global energy transformation.Ren Jingdong, Deputy Director of the National Energy Administration of China, pointed out in his speech that the 7th HQF's first establishment of the parallel session about energy reflects the widespread concern of countries around the world for energy transformation and development. China has achieved leapfrog development in the field of new energy, providing a new feasible path for the safe development of China's energy and also bringing new challenges to the safe and stable operation of the power system, which urgently requires the accelerated development of power system regulation capabilities represented by new energy storage. China supports the diversified and high-quality development of new energy storage. As of the end of September, China has built a total installed capacity of new energy storage exceeding 58 million kilowatts, with continuous emergence of new energy storage technology innovation, continuous improvement in dispatch and utilization levels, and continuous enhancement of effectiveness, becoming an important component of the power system and one of the new drivers for the development of new quality production forces.Laureano Ortega Murillo, Presidential Advisor for the Promotion of Investment, Trade and International Cooperation, the Republic of Nicaragua, said in his speech that new energy is a strategic priority for the Nicaraguan government. Nicaragua is a successful example of energy transformation in the Latin American region. Nicaragua has extensive cooperation with China in the energy field, including photovoltaic energy projects, large-scale hydropower projects, and power transmission facilities, which have effectively improved Nicaragua's energy supply capacity and promoted the sustainable development of energy. Nicaragua firmly supports China's global cooperation initiatives such as the joint construction of the Belt and Road and is willing to continue to deepen cooperation with China to jointly promote the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind.Stanley Whittingham, the 2019 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry and a professor at Binghamton University, New York, Huang Zhen, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a chaired professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhao Tianshou, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director of the Energy Institute for Carbon Neutrality at Southern University of Science and Technology, Niu Dongxiao, academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences and Deputy Director of the Academic Committee of North China Electric Power University, and Li Zhong, academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences and Chief Engineer of the Research Institute of China National Offshore Oil Corporation, delivered keynote speeches on lithium battery systems, electrosynthesis fuel technology, flow battery technology, operation of new power systems, and marine carbon neutral technology in energy transformation. In the roundtable discussion, Hazem Ben-Gacem, Chief Executive of BlueFive Capital, Vice Chairman of Investcorp Capital plc and Executive Board Member of Harvard University School of Government, Wang Shaowu, Vice President of China Southern Power Grid, Shi Xiaofeng, Vice President of Sungrow, PV & Storage Business Group, Brian Joe, Emerson Vice President of Asia Pacific, Xiao Li Ye, Director of the Key Laboratory of Applied Superconductivity, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS); Director of Energy Storage Technology Research Department, Institute of Electrical Engineering of CAS, and Wang Peng, Executive Dean of the National Energy Development Strategy Research Institute, North China Electric Power University, shared brilliant insights on energy storage technology development, energy investment and power markets, new energy grid connection and energy system security, construction of new power systems, and future energy development.Chen Wenkai, Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of Institutes of Science and Development, Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the forum and delivered a welcome speech on behalf of the co-organizers. Approximately 250 participants, including representatives from domestic and foreign governments, representatives from power and new energy enterprises, and scholars from universities, attended the meeting.
